METALLICA SCREAMING SUICIDE REVIEW

The biggest of the big four, Metallica, dropped a brand new single this week titled 'Screaming Suicide' taken from their upcoming album 72 Seasons which is set to be released on 14th April 2023 via the bands own record label Blackened Recordings.

The new single for me was a slight let down, it's not bad by any means, it's still a decent song but it just does not scream Metallica to me. Even Lux Aeterna had elements of the classic Metallica sound but this one for me at least failed to deliver that.

To me Metallica tracks are usually filled with unique riffs, solos, drums that fill you with suspense and of course James Hatfield's iconic metal vocals that just capture your attention within seconds. However, this new single just did not have that(as side from the intro which did initially get me excited), especially when you compare it to classic Metallica tracks such as Welcome Home (Sanitarium) and of course the iconic Enter Sandman.

I know bands evolve and change over time and Metallica has been around for a pretty long time and they know (atleast they should know) exactly what their fans love about the Metallica we know and love today. Even their last album Hardwired wasn't what I expected, in fact there isn't a single track in that album that I enjoyed. 72 Seasons so far is much better, I enjoy Lux Aeterna but the new single for me just didn't cut it.

It may be just my taste in music, as I said above I adore the classics, especially tracks like Wherever I May Roam, that track is played daily at full volume. There's plenty more to come from Metallica and who knows I may change my tune about this album once it's been fully released, sometimes it takes a little time for tracks to grow on me.

Even with this review it's taken me a little while to think about it and I don't like writing negative reviews, but this is my honest opinion.

In no way am I saying it's a bad track, of course if you love it then play it to your hearts content, but when I hear smaller artists releasing such incredible music that feature so many unique sounds and ensuring each track is crafted with passion, it does disappoint me a little.

I'm still super looking forward to witnessing Metallica seek and destroy at Download 2023 and two nights of Metallica? Fuck yeah!

What are your thoughts on the new track? Could you help me change my mind? Let me know in the comments below or drop a comment on our socials!

See ya'll in the crowd in June!
